We are incredibly proud to have been nominated for this year's Capsticks Award for Innovation at the HPMA Excellence in People Awards 2021. This nomination acknowledges the work of the National COVID-19 Clinical Assessment Service (CCAS), a service designed to support community clinicians to deliver successful COVID assessments to patients, without face-to-face appointments.
The objective when establishing CCAS was to onboard clinicians safely at pace, to support patients and the NHS during the pandemic. Alongside South Central Ambulance Service, SCW worked in partnership with stakeholders to co-design, mobilise and deliver a novel, remote service in a very short time frame.
Digital solutions were developed to systemise workforce onboarding, training, mobilisation and national service delivery. The service enabled inactive, retired, or shielding clinicians with experiences in remote clinical assessments and decision making to assess, triage and provide self-care advice to patients with suspected COVID-19.
Throughout the pandemic, CCAS continued to engage, onboard and support community clinicians to deliver successful assessments to patients, without face-to-face appointments. This released much-needed capacity to other areas of the NHS to allow a focus on patients at greatest risk of complications.
Liam Williams, Director of Quality and System Performance, shares his thoughts on being shortlisted:
SCW staff working with South Central Ambulance Service to create and mobilise the Covid Clinical Assessment Service is a source of great pride for everyone who was involved. Across both of our organisations and working with many others, we created a service that has made a difference to over half a million patients who presented with COVID-19 symptoms. This service was not planned for, it was conceived and mobilised in a matter of weeks with continuous innovation and improvement to ensure it was safe, resilient and sustainable. Being shortlisted for the HPMA Capsticks Award for Innovation is genuine recognition for the commitment and hard work shown by everyone involved. The leadership teams of both SCW and SCAS are incredibly proud of what has been achieved by working together in true partnership to benefit patients across England.
The award ceremony will take place on Thursday 7 October.
