Working with Aster Housing Association to set up a new partnership supporting communities across our geography

Helping people to get the support that they need within the communities that they live in is central to our work at SCW. With the evidence clear that social isolation is as damaging to our health as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day, we work to join people up within their neighbourhoods to support them to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

We know that about a third of people going to see their GP are not looking for clinical advice. They are there looking for social or emotional support to help them deal with complex issues in their day to day lives – caring for elderly relatives, accessing benefits and housing issues to name a few. As one GP told us ‘we used to deal with broken bones. We are now dealing with broken lives’.

So SCW is proud to be working with Aster Housing Association to set up a new partnership supporting communities across our geography.

Earlier this month along with Aster, we hosted an event to launch the Housing and Health Collective - bringing together 15 housing providers from across the South of England. With more than 50 partners in the room, we worked through the challenge as we each saw it, agreeing on a collective agreement on how we will work together going forward.

The housing association movement was founded on the values of good health and support for the vulnerable. Those values are just as important now as they were 100 years ago. In many respects, our partners in housing are closer to peoples’ first-hand experience of loneliness and the chronic impact it has on their lives. We can learn from that experience.

Our aim is to work as one team - to learn, grow and create systematic change through joining up housing, health and communities across the SCW footprint.

The difference in our approach will be how we work together for mutual benefit, ensuring both housing and health work towards measurable improvements for the communities in which we operate, all while ensuring that the models we create remain sustainable.
